NYFW Video: John Paul Ataker Spring Summer 2018 Collection
One of the shows we attended this weekend was John Paul Ataker–held at Skylight Clarkson Square in New York City.
Designer, Numan Ataker, a native of Turkey grew up in the fashion business with his family specializing in textiles. Ataker himself was classically trained as a tailor which helped in honing his skills as a designer. This marks his fifth season at New York Fashion Week.
For the Spring/Summer collection, inspiration was drawn from the Black Sea Region with a mixture of bolero jackets, baggy pants, and waistcoats. There was an emphasis on unbleached fabrics with a color palette of primarily whites, black, and ivory. The designer also wanted to draw attention to “slow fashion.” Addressing, “It’s about being purposeful and realizing that fewer is better and healthier both for humankind and our planet.”
This was a thoughtful and breathtaking collection. I loved the curve-hugging silhouettes; structured shapes contrasted with soft, feminine ruffles. Each gown was artfully designed with hand sewn needlework and bold knotted details. There were cocktail moments with slim pants and metallic fringe; gorgeous pleated organza gowns for red carpet. And of course, the stunner worn by super model Karlie Kloss to close the show.
